American Southwest Theatre Company at NMSU Theatre Arts holds auditions for season productions in August and January.  The specific date varies but it is traditionally the first Saturday after classes at NMSU begin.  Callbacks are held the next day.

Auditions are open to all, although priority is often given to current NMSU students.  Students do not need to be Theatre Arts majors to be cast.

For certain productions, ASTC company members and guest artists may be used to fill roles as part of our commitment to connecting students with professional artists.

Audition announcements are made on this website as well as in local newspapers.  Auditions traditionally consist of presenting two memorized, contrasting 60-second monologues.  In semesters where there is a musical, we may ask for 16 bars (about 30 seconds) from a musical theatre song.  Specific auditions requirements are stated clearly in the audition announcements.  Callbacks consist of readings from the plays.

For NMSU students, you must have an accumulative 2.7 GPA to be cast in a production.  Incoming freshmen are exempt from this requirement their first semester but their academic progress will be closely monitored.

The department has created this set of guidelines to help auditioners best prepare for their audition.  To see what auditions are coming up next, click here.
