For over 29 years, NMSU Theatre Arts has provided exceptional children's theatre programming through our Amercian Southwest Children's Theatre Company program (formerly Children's Theatre Workshop). This after-school program is based on the theory of creative dramatics: children learning life skills--collaboration, creativity, expression, cooperation and trust--while creating a theatre piece of their own devising.
Our program is team-taught by nationally-renowned director Larissa Lury supported by a cadre of education majors enrolled in New Mexico State University's elementary education program. It is intended for students in first through sixth grade.
We believe that great programming can also be affordable: our workshop is only $25 for five weeks of classes! We will offer two five week sessions throughout the academic year: October-November and March-April.
Every child deserves arts education. They deserve a chance to develop life skills in a safe and fun environment. Amercian Southwest Children's Theatre Company provides that and so much more!
Fall Session: Mondays, October 20th-November 17th: 3:30pm-5pm
“When the moon has a green rim with red meat inside and black seeds on the red meat, then in the Rootabaga Country they call it a Watermelon Moon and look for anything to happen.”
--from The Rootabaga Stories by Carl Sandburg
Come live inside a world where spiders weave toboggans that can take you to the moon, where people buy things with fleems instead of money, and clothes turn into popcorn. For five weeks, we will use drama to take on the unique characters, and dive into the silly, fun and surprisingly poignant universe of Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories.
Fall Session: Wednesdays, October 22nd-November 19th: 4pm-5:30pm
Leshies. Werewolves. Selkies. Kitsune. Encantados. What do these creatures have in common? They are shapeshifters—sometimes human, sometimes animal—theirs are the stories of transformation and of moving between worlds. Join as us we transform ourselves as actors to take on these creatures and to bring their stories to life.
